More than 11 million children in sub-Saharan Africa have lost at least one parent to AIDS, and that number is likely to rise to 20 million by 2010, according to UNICEF. Two million children under the age of fourteen in sub-Saharan Africa are HIV positive, and 250,000 additional children and young people around the world are infected every month.

ARCA ASSOCIATES has been contracted by an ad-hoc consortium of ten agencies to produce a video-based curriculum for frontline childcare workers in Africa on how to care for children either affected and/or infected by HIV/AIDS. We are developing the program of study after filming in ten countries in Eastern and Southern Africa.

The finished materials will help local schoolteachers, social workers, religious organizations, parents, grandparents, and government officials gain a practical understanding of how best to help orphans and sick children, and how to keep healthy children living healthy lives. Course content will be based on local, replicable examples of good practice.
